My initiation into birth work was an unexpected one that began with the birth of my first child Ky. Entering into my first labour, extremely naive, little support and minimal education around birth, I found myself so out of my depth and caught up in a terrifying birth experience. Like many women today I thought, how hard could it be? It might be one day of pain!. I thought I was tough, I had my mother with me who was a spiritual healer, my husband who loved me and lots of aromatherapy and candles!!! After a 3 day labour, minimal progress and lots of fear, I was put on a drip, had every drug possible, an enormous episiotomy and my son was suctioned out of me!!! I spent the next year in a state of shock and could not get my head around what had happened at my birth!! After telling my story in all its drama and glory many times, I still could not stop reliving it in my head.

It wasn’t till I was pregnant with my second child that I realised how much I was carrying my birth trauma. Each time I would go to the birth centre for my pre natal check I would start hyperventilating and not want to go. I had issues!!! So I went and spoke to an experienced woman who worked as a childbirth educator and birth attendant and spoke my fears and processed my birth. It was here that I discovered the world of home birth and the beautiful people that worked in this field.

We decided to have a homebirth and with my fabulous midwife and obstetrician we set about creating a safe space and environment in which to birth our daughter!!

After a long labour my daughter was born in our lounge room in the big tub of water with my 2 dear friends, my mother and my husband holding me. It was truly the most magnificent thing I have ever done and giving birth to Indi changed my life.

I felt so empowered and knew that other women could do what I had done. I knew a lot of women that had experienced traumatic births and held that fear which carried on to their 2nd and 3rd births. Having experienced both sides of birthing I knew this life experience could help others.

I became involved in birth in whatever way I could. I went to workshops, read 100’s of books and set about my own research project to collect women’s birth stories. I felt it was very important to hear women’s stories and what they had experienced. I wanted to know what women wanted. I have collected over 150 stories, each a unique story and I am always keen to collect more.

I studied with Rhea Dempsey in her Birthing Wisdom – Birth Attendant training and have had the most valuable teaching of all, by being with women as they birth.

These days I find myself busy with my beautiful family, my husband and my 6yr old son and 3yr old daughter. Along with birth work I also do Archetypal Chart Readings and run regular “Cutting the Ties That Bind” workshops.

I am extremely passionate about birth, with teaching our workshops as well as attending births. This definitely feels like my life’s calling and I feel it is a privilege and an honour to work in this field.
